What Powerwall does
Powerwall is a home battery. It stores electricity from solar panels or from the grid, then powers your home at night, during high-cost hours, or during an outage. Powerwall 3 has a solar inverter built in, so a new solar and battery system needs fewer separate parts. You control it from the Tesla app, where you choose whether to prioritize backup, bill savings or a mix.
Built for Valley weather
- Storm Watch. When severe weather is forecast, Powerwall charges itself to full ahead of the storm.
- Outage backup. When the grid goes down, Powerwall switches your home to stored energy and keeps your solar producing.
- Heat, humidity and flooding. Tesla designs Powerwall for extreme weather. Tesla states it keeps operating in high humidity and in flooding up to two feet of water.
Whole-home or essential loads
Tesla states that a single Powerwall can power an entire home, including air conditioning. What your home needs depends on its size, your electrical service and what you want running during an outage. We review your electric use and your panel, then size the system. Some homes back up everything. Others back up the circuits that matter most and add a second unit later.
With solar, without solar, or added to solar you already have
- New solar and Powerwall together. One integrated system, installed by one contractor.
- Added to existing solar. In many cases Powerwall can be added to a system that is already on your roof. We check your inverter and panel first.
- Without solar. Powerwall can charge from the grid and still provide backup.
Tesla vehicles and Tesla Electric
- A compatible Tesla vehicle can share its battery with your home through PowerShare and extend your backup during a long outage.
- In areas where you can choose your electricity provider, Tesla Electric can credit Powerwall owners for supporting the grid.
