Does Insurance Cover Solar Panel Removal for a Roof Replacement?

Published

Short answer: Often yes, when the roof replacement itself is a covered claim. It depends on your policy, so check it before work starts and ask your adjuster to list the solar work separately.

Why the solar work can be part of the claim

Roof-mounted solar panels are usually treated as part of the home's structure and fall under a homeowners policy's dwelling coverage. When hail or wind damages the roof and the insurer approves a replacement, the panels have to come off for the roofer to do the work. Removing and reinstalling them is a cost of completing the covered repair, and it can be included in the claim.

In our experience in the Valley, this is how it goes on most covered roof claims.

Three things to check in your policy

  1. Wind and hail exclusions. Some policies exclude wind and hail damage or carry a separate deductible for it. Hail and wind drive most roof claims here, so read this part first.
  2. Whether solar panels are covered at all. Most policies cover roof-mounted panels. A few exclude them.
  3. Your deductible and coverage limit. The solar work counts toward the same claim, so it is subject to the same deductible and limit.

Your insurance agent can answer all three in one call.

What to ask your adjuster

Ask for solar panel detach and reset to be written as its own line item in the estimate, not folded into the roofing total. A separate line makes it clear what the insurer is paying for and avoids a dispute later about whether the solar work was included.

What we provide for the claim

RGV Solar gives you a written scope and the details an adjuster needs: panel count, system details and scope of work. We are a licensed Texas electrical contractor, TECL #37418, and we work with your roofer's schedule or handle the roof ourselves. Read more on our insurance claims page.

If your system is leased

A leased system or a power purchase agreement is owned by the solar company, and they may have their own requirements for who removes it. Check your agreement before scheduling any work.
